Spells are like everything else in the universe – they work with energy and light. A spell by a sorcerer or a spell by a witch, use the same energy but in a different way – but it is all energy being manipulated and bent to suit the needs of the wizard or witch.

Revenge spells

A revenge spell has the energies of all 3 people in the spell. The power of the witch is to bend the energies of both the other parties to create an environment of revenge. The witch doctor will suck from your hatred, and desire for revenge, and warp it, or bend it  toward the person you seek to hurt. While this may seem easy enough it can be very dangerous for all 3 parties. Once the spell is energised by intent to harm, it will seek out and fulfill the intent. If the person you are trying to hurt has more power than your witchdoctor, or has a powerful protection spell, this “hate energy” or “revenge energy” needs to go somewhere – it cannot just disappear. The revenge spell goes where there is least resistance, not to the witch doctor, because he has power to avoid it, but back to the person who is seeking revenge. The spell backfire on you and you will end up being hurt by your own revenge.

Forgiveness Spells

It takes a very powerful witch to craft powerful revenge spells. A witch or witchdoctor who knows what sorcery is all about, knows this. A practitioner that has any sense of responsibility will make the dangers quite clear to you. They will first seek every opportunity for you to resolve the problem without magic – often a better spell is a forgiveness spell – this may be the type a spell you will learn in sangoma training, as sangomas work with good energy, and serve their people – not their pocket.

If you want to make lots of money, then Sangoma training is not what you are after – if you feel a desire to help others, to lift the community and to serve humanity, then if you have been called by the ancestors, learning to be a sangoma is what you should look at. Sangoma training is difficult and long. You will need to be brave to enter into the realm of spirits and ancestors. It is not for everyone, and there are many people who start but do not finish. If you do decide to become a sangoma, find a true sangoma to train under – someone who really understands the duties of such an African healer. Look to a person that is respected, not feared, a sangoma that is loved by the people of the village. while there are many sangomas and witches out there – many are just con men and woman who’s primary goal is to take as much power and money from the people that they serve – don’t let that be you! There will be many sangoma rituals that you will need to follow – some of then will scare the hell out of you, almost seeming like witchcraft – but like all people who work with spirit, you will need to be powerful enough to deal with black magic and other powers that are on the side of evil.

What are clairvoyants, mediums, psychics – many healers and psychics in Johannesburg and South Africa claim to have these powers – I sometimes wonder how to become a psychic. Can it be taught, or is it a gift? We all have these powers  – but it depends on how strong or trained the gift is. South African traditional healers, sangomas and witchdoctors claim that they are mediums or psychics – I am sceptical about many of the so called “professors of magic”.

Definitions of clairvoyants, mediums, psychics:

Psychic – pertaining to mental forces, telepathy, extra sensory perception

A psychic they will have a mental connection with you. A  psychic will  be able to read your energy field. If they are very sensitive, a psychic will pick up on your thoughts and energy.

Medium – contacting and being able to communicate with spirits of the dead

Simply a medium is someone that ‘talks to dead people’ A deeper understanding of a medium says that a medium is the ‘channel’ by which information from spirit passes through or is the channel through which any energy passes. All people channel energy in some from. An artist is a medium, the artists brushes are the medium through which energy flows to create the art. For a singer, the medium is the voice, through which energy flows to make the song. And healers are mediums through which the energy flows to those that they are trying to heal.

Anyone person working with energy and spirit, will be a medium. The medium is the channel. If someone calls themselves a clairvoyant or a medium, they should be able to describe those who you love, or loved -  from the spirit world. They will also be able to describe the stuff in you house.

 Clairvoyance – the ability to see things beyond our normal senses

There are 3 types – clairvoyance, clairaudience and clairsentience. 

Clairvoyance means clear seeing. A clairvoyant will be able to see images of people and places. They will also see things in their minds eye, and will describe these to you in a reading. They are not fortunetellers or seers of the future, A clairvoyant may be able to give information about the future, but clairvoyance is means clear seeing, not seeing into the future.

A clairvoyant will, be able to tell you what happened in your past what is happening at the present moment. Apart from clairvoyance, there is clairaudience. This is clear hearing. A clairvoyant will hear information from Spirit. The last ability  is clairsentience. This is the feeling or sensing of things, It is clear sensing. When working with an ill person the practitioner may get a brief “feeling” of what the client is feeling – like the sickness.

Clairvoyants, mediums and psychics are all different – although someone may have 2 or all of these gifts. Every human and animal has parts of these, maybe undeveloped, or unrecognized. The fact that many traditional healers offer these services does not mean they are good mediums, psychics or clairvoyants – in fact, many of them use these terms loosely to get business. In saying that good Sangomas and healers will have some of these abilities – the trick is to separate the wheat from the chaff! There are many claims of clairvoyants, mediums, psychics in Johannesburg and in South Africa. Healers in Johannesburg may be able to help you find out how to become a psychic, but remember – you must have a gift for it – otherwise it will be very difficult.

The Zulu word “umuthi” has a 3 meaning. these are tree, bark and medicine. It is frequently wrongly spelt and said as “Muti” by westerners. Muti has a very bad reputation in Africa – and is blamed for many of the ritual murders that take place – children are often the victims of so called “Muti Murders‘ – which is the killing of humans for their body parts to be used in muti. Sangomas do not use such practises and a witch that does is called  “umthakathi“. This is a very powerful witch – and practices black magic.

Many people get blamed for being  umthakathi – and this usually results in the killing by the affected parties. Spells are used against the umthakathi and by umthakathi. Sangomas, or isangomas will help to protect people from these witches and from the tokoloshe (sometimes used by powerful witches).

Sickness, as westerners see it is very different to how traditional Africans see it. Africans see sickness as being caused by something -

The 3 causes of sickness are:

One has been bewitched by an umthakathi (witch).

Imimoya emibi (evil spirits) are influencing ones life.

The amadlozi (ancestral spirits) are reminding that a sacrifice for the spirits need to be done.

An isangoma’s task is to make sense of these issues and help find a cure or solution. The “sickness” includes – any evil, unwanted happening or bad event, this includes sickness, loss of employment, accidents, failing marks at school, lightening strikes, bad harvest, loosing ones love and just about any event that happens in a persons life that is considered bad.

Any kind of trouble that persists will result in request for a consultation. This is usually attended by the whole family. The isangoma is consulted, finding all the facts and the thoughts of the family members. The isangoma then calls on the ancestral spirits. Often, when they come there is much sneezing. The ancestral spirits are greatly respected by everyone – and will be will be welcomed in an appropriate manner. The ancestors are welcomed with their title of honour – which is “makhosi! makhoso! makhosi!” With the help and guidance of the ancestral spirits, the isangoma is then able to be able to smell out the source of the evil and trouble – this is called ukubula.


A person who is blamed for the evil and trouble – or said to have caused the misfortune will be called a witch (umthakathi). This is a very serious allegation – as the only option is then to kill this person. The power that the isangoma wields is immense – and, in Africa, the calling of someone umthakathi has resulted in many murders. Old woman in particular are often accused of being umthakathi.

Should evil spirits be the blame (imimoya emibi) (evil spirits), an iNyanga (herbalist) will be consulted. Abafundisi, teachers or Pastors, will then help to drive the evil spirits away.

Sometimes the amadlozi (ancestral spirits) have a thirst for for blood and utshwala (Sorghum-beer). This comes through the persons illness. If this happens then, an umsebenzi (ancestral sacrifice) is supposed to be offered – it can be a cow or a goat which is slaughtered. The amadlozi must receive their fair share of the sacrifice. The sacrifice is placed into the umsamo (a crescent shaped separate area at the back of the main hut of the kraal). The gall is sprinkled in the cattle kraal and the amadlozi are given the sacrifice in an ukhamba (clay pot), one filled with blood and another of beer.

As a lasting reminder for the amadlozi, that ones duty has been fulfilled faithfully, the horns of the sacrificial goat or cow are placed on top of the entrance of the roof of the main hut in the kraal. A bracelet is made from the skin of the slaughtered animal and is worn round the wrists of the family members. This is to show the amadlozi that the duties have been done and it is there to remind him.

The amadlozi are said to quench their thirst for blood from the “symbolically residual” blood on the bracelet and will then not harm the family members.

A iziNyanga will also help – they are herbalists, and are required to have a good knowledge of many natural elements.  Many medicines come from plants, herbs and trees.

What do you need a spell for – searching on the Internet offer and insight into South African’s belief in spells and the power of magic. There are literally thousands of people who believe that a spell is the way out of their problems. It is not just limited to South Africans and African people. Europeans, Americans – in fact every nation on earth – even Christian nations seem to have a belief in wizardry and witches – they are all looking for spells.

Just a first page search on google for spell making and how to make a spell – how to spell – and look at the sites that offer to fix you life with a spell – they all charge and I reckon that they are all making money.

There is a fine line between witchcraft and healers  – both use ancient knowledge, African rituals, and a fundamental belief in the ancestors, to practise their craft. A traditional healer that makes a living primarily out of concocting love spells and money spells cannot really be called a traditional healer – this, for me, falls under the heading of witchcraft – which is using dark practises and voodoo to manipulate others.

True traditional healers will have a love for the earth and all it’s peoples and creatures. They will not cast spells and curses on others, and will not use living creatures and body parts to make their spells and curses. They will be actively involved in helping the community through wisdom and care - involving themselves in all aspects of holistic living. Caring for the old, advising the young – and above all respecting life.

Witches and witch doctors on the other hand will master the dark arts – how to control people, and take the money of the uninformed. The will offer spells for winning soccer, spells for finding lost love – binding love spells that control another. They will use body parts and animals to make powerful magic that allows criminals to avoid bullets – spells that repel bullets. They will use the Tokoloshe to help them in their evil ways – and be sure of this – if you use a witch doctor for evil purposes – you will be owned by that sorcerer. He will have power over you and you family, and he will use it for his own benefit. Once a witch doctor owns a piece of you – you can seldom break free – even with the help of a white witch or powerful Sangoma. You choose – healers or Witches!

Witch Doctors

Beliefs of witchcraft are wide spread. People like the idea of witchcraft because it allows them to control the universe or other people. American Witchcraft

Witchcraft in the States, and in fact true Wicca anywhere in the world, does not prescribe to evil, or the controlling of another’s destiny – African witchcraft, the bad type, does – and is used by many average African people to get things and love, that they do not deserve. This is against all principles of White witchcraft and Wicca. Black magic and sorcery are the realm of evil – and anyone who dabbles there will reap those rewards. In the beginning of witchcraft the idea was to holistically work with the universe and natural ways to enhance humans and their lives.

Witchcraft religion soon morphed into something more sinister – and people being what people are, soon realised that the natural ways could be bent and deformed for selfish purposes. The encyclopedia of witchcraft is quite clear on what is black magic and what is white magic – and casting spells on others, whether it be love spell or money spell, if it involves controlling another persons free will – IT IS BLACK MAGIC.

African Witchcraft

No matter how you define witchcraft, or warn of the dangers of controlling another’s free will – there will always be those people or entities that will use the black arts to benefit for themselves. Witchcraft beliefs in Africa are so prevalent that the business of Sangomas and traditional healers is booming. Whether many of these tribal healers are qualified, or knowledgeable does not seem to matter – if they offer power over others, or a cheap love spell or strong money spell – that is all that is important. If others are hurt, or their free will manipulated – well that is not even considered by many African people. How to spell or how to cast spells is a subject that should be carefully studied.
